Dad’s pressure kills budding talent

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

A promising 14-year-old table tennis player died on Monday at his south Kolkata home while practising with his father. The boy’s mother and sister blamed the father. They said he had forced the boy to practise from early morning till well after noon — when the boy collapsed.

The police have detained the father, but said the cause of death would be known only after a post mortem examination. The family and neighbours of Dipak Bhattacharjee alleged he beat and tortured his son Biswadip whenever the boy lost a match.

“This morning my brother returned home at around 6 a.m. after exercising at the Rifle Club Playground,” Biswadip’s younger sister Neha said. “Breakfast over, my father asked him to start practising at once. Both he and I practised for three hours from 7.30 a.m. When we stopped, my father asked Biswadip to continue,” said Neha.

She said Dipak hit Biswadip with a small plastic object whenever he missed a shot. Around 12.30 p.m., Biswadip collapsed. Biswadip was declared dead at MR Bangur Hospital. Biswadip’s mother Papiya too blamed Dipak for the death.

Biswadip’s former coach Tapan Chandra narrated an instance when Dipak beat his son with an iron chain. “I took the boy to hospital for an MRI scan. He had a serious head injury,” said Chandra.

Woman drinks so much water she dies

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

A woman who competed in a radio station’s contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday.Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

“She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad,” said Laura Rios, one of Strange’s co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. “She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her.”

It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence “consistent with a water intoxication death,” said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station’s owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange’s death.

“We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred,” he said.

Initially, contestants were handed 8-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

“They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy,” said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. “They told us if you don’t feel like you can do this, don’t put your health at risk.”

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. “My bladder couldn’t handle it anymore,” he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

“I was talking to her and she was a nice lady,” Ybarra said. “She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids.”

1000 People will become Millionares Overnight!!!

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

Yes More than 1000 middle class families are going to become millionares overnight within few days. Its a jackpot of its kind that no one (not even them) had ever imagined.

With the recent Economic developments in India, There has been huge rush to buy out the propperties in prime cities. Mumbai ( Bombay ) which is considered to be the economic Hub of India is the frontier in this race. The property rates have sky rocketed in the sub urban areas on Mumbai / Bombay.

As there has been acute shortage of open land available in these areas, Re-development is the only option that is left here.

In what is said to be Mother of All Development deals 3 different developers are offering approx 800 families more than 10 million Rupees Each depending on their Total Area.

At Suburban Area Santacruz, Approx 600 families having area ranging from 300 Sq feet to 5000 Sq. Feet are offered from Rs. 18 Millions to 50 Millions accordingly.

In Another Deal at Khar Another prime suburban area , 50 Families are offered Huge amount of Rs. 50 Million each. However these members are unlikely to accept this deal as there are other developers who are ready to offer even more than this amount.

Third Likely Deal  Has occured at Bandra area where 500 Families are offered Rs 10 Million for area of around 150 Sq. Feet!!!

According to property analyst, there would be many such deals in the near future and also the other property rates would be highly affected due to these deals as there would be around 1000 millionares out there to find an alternative accomodation!!!
